Personalised Engraving on an Automatic Watch: A Message at the Heart of the Movement

Gifting a watch is a singular gesture. It is choosing an object that will accompany its owner on a daily basis. To make this timepiece even more intimate, personalised engraving is an obvious choice. While this process is standard on solid steel case backs, the personalisation of an automatic watch requires a very specific horological approach.

At Gustave & Cie, we wanted to preserve the beauty of the visible mechanism while offering you the opportunity to leave your mark. Discover how the personalisation of our automatic collections transforms a beautiful watch assembled in France into a unique and meaningful heirloom.

The magic of the transparent case back: revealing the mechanics

Horology enthusiasts know it well: one of the greatest pleasures offered by an automatic watch is being able to admire its movement. This is why the back of our automatic cases is equipped with a glass back. This transparent window allows you to dive your gaze directly into the complex gears, to contemplate the bridges, the jewels, and to observe the regular beating of the balance wheel that gives life to the watch.

However, this transparency poses a significant challenge for personalisation. Unlike our quartz collections, which feature a solid steel case back ideal for long engravings, the glass back of an automatic watch cannot be engraved without altering the visibility of the movement and risking the structural integrity. It was therefore necessary to find another location to host your message.

The oscillating weight: a canvas of expression in motion

To combine the aesthetics of a transparent back with the requirement of a personalised engraving, we have chosen to engrave the heart of the movement directly: the oscillating weight. Also known as the "rotor," this half-moon-shaped metallic piece is essential to the operation of an automatic watch. It is this component that, by rotating freely with the movements of your wrist, will wind the mainspring and store the energy necessary for the hands to function.

Gifting an engraved automatic watch: a meaningful present

An automatic watch is, by its very nature, an object to be passed down. By choosing to add a personalised engraving, you transform a time-measuring instrument into a true talisman. Whether to mark an important milestone, celebrate a professional achievement, or simply prove a deep attachment, adding a message to the oscillating weight guarantees the "emotion of the gift".

Conclusion

The personalisation of our automatic watches transcends a simple aesthetic detail. By moving the engraving from the case back to the oscillating weight, Gustave & Cie offers you the opportunity to link your own story to horological mechanics. A concise message of 15 characters thus becomes an indelible mark, a secret signature in perpetual motion. It is in this delicate attention that true luxury resides: that of possessing, or gifting, a singular and profoundly living object.
